SCDOR Notices: What a South Carolina Tax Letter Means
South Carolina runs its own notices, deadlines and appeal rights, separate from the IRS. Find the type of letter you received below.
A South Carolina Department of Revenue notice is separate from anything the IRS sends, and the state's deadlines are its own. Identify the notice type and date first. If it proposes tax you disagree with, the protest window is set by South Carolina law, so act before it closes.

Where to start with an SCDOR letter
SCDOR's free portal, MyDORWAY, is the starting point for most notices: you can pay there, and for many of SCDOR's most frequently issued notices its Notice Help Tool explains why the notice was sent. SCDOR will discuss your notice with someone else only once a valid power of attorney is on file, so if you want a CPA to handle it, that form comes first.
If you also have an IRS notice for the same year, look at the two together. A change to your federal return can change the state return built on it, so answering one in isolation can leave the other wrong.
